The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and youth, through a professionally supported one-to-one relationship with a caring adult. The organization aims to assist young people in achieving their highest potential as they grow to become confident, competent and caring individuals.
Description:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware has been providing mentors for Delaware youth since 1964. We have 4 different programs of mentoring. Our Community Based program is our traditional program where volunteers are matched with a child between the ages of 6-17, from a single-parent family. The mentor and the "Little" get together two to four times a month after school or on the weekends. Our Mentoring Children of Promise works like the Community-Based except that these children are between the ages of 5-15 and have an incarcerated mother or father. In either the Community-Based or Mentoring Children of Promise married couples can be matched with a boy as a team. Our School-Based Mentoring program takes place at school. Volunteers spend 45 minutes to an hour each week with a student who is at-risk. Mentors help with school work, read, play games or just hang out and talk with the child about their day.
In 2009, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware has served over 1,300 children.
